Team A Q&A

Charles Davis

Role: Programmer
Quote: “. . .”
Why did you join robotics?
I have done it for the past few years and I wanted to continue this year and hopefully be able to teach the new people what I have learned.
What has robots helped you learn so far?
 Programming in C, Teamwork, Engineering
What is the most challenging thing about robotics?
Having a problem in front of me that I have no idea how to solve.
Have you had past robotics experience?
Yes I have does vex robotics since 8th grade and I did Lego robotics the year before that.
What is your favorite part about robotics?
Having a problem in front of me that I have no idea how to solve.

Role: Head of website committee, student robot driver, resident nerd
Quote: “if it wont work, try everything to make it work, then you have tried”

Why did you join robotics?
I had a class from middle school which worked with VEX components and it was a fun class and i wanted to continue working with robotics

What has robots helped you learn so far?
VRC is so much cooler than FLL and has a host of new problems to solve and new things to do

What is the most challenging thing about robotics?
Money because we need structure materials and V5 to compete and learning everything new and get everything on time

Have you had past robotics experience?
Yes from middle school

What is your favorite part about robotics?
Watching everything be finished and working smoothly

Daijah Pinckney-Cornish

Quote: “Be legendary.”

Role: Engineering Notebook & Builder

Why did you join robotics?
I joined robotics because i wanted to be different than my friends and mainly because all of my friends ether play sports or hangout everyday. Also, wanted to be different because nobody in my family ever did anything like this, and I would like to be the first generation and make something great out of this. I want to be different because nobody would have ever thought I would do something like this until now. I want to be different because I want to prove them wrong.

What has robotics helped you learn so far?
Robotics has helped me learn to be better at my social skills. Throughout all my life i have been the quiet person in my class, and robotics has help me break out of my shell and interact with people. It has help me interact with people because when doing challenges you need to be able to brainstorm, give ideas, and help people do things. With that, i have become so much better with interacting with people. Not only does robotics help you with what you want to do as your career it also helps you with many other things in life.

What is the most challenging thing about robotics?
The most challenging thing about robotics would have to be figuring out how you would build a your formal robot. Therefore, also with that trying to design and make sure you have all the things you need in place to build your robot correctly, but also the way you want it. One example would the claw, and figuring out how you would want your robot to move back and forth or side to side.
Have you had past robotics experience?
No, I have not had previous robotics experience.

What is your favorite part about robotics?
My favorite part about robotics is brainstorming and designing the robots. I say this because brainstorming not only allows the team to form great ideas and design amazing things, it also allows the team to bond in unique way.

Role: Programmer

Why did you join robotics?
I like robots and this should be a good learning experience

What has robotics helped you learn so far?
Team management

What is the most challenging thing about robotics?
Figuring things out among a large group of people.

Have you had past robotics experience?
Somewhat

What is your favorite part about robotics?
Just hanging out and getting things done.

Garrett Dawson

Quote: ”Already old Fred's face was creasing up in the soft expression of someone who has been mugged in Memory Lane.”

Role: quartermaster, resident madman

Why did you join robotics? Originally it was suggested to me by me engineering teacher as she thought i would enjoy the challenge and problem solving. She was right because even in the first week i had already created close bonds with the people on my team and in the room. I keep returning every year because it is a place i feel at home in, creating bonds that last me well after the end of the season.

What has robotics helped you learn so far? It has helped me learn organization and on the spot problem solving. Over the years i have developed stress handling techniques which are invaluable during competitions. Most importantly though it has taught me the value of teams and close relations you can form with them, after building and dedicating a year to a robot each team becomes like a machine themselves working in tandem with each other smoothly and efficiently

What is the most challenging thing about robotics? Creating the initial design is always a struggle for me as you have to create an idea from scratch and it always is too small or unachievably large. After that the most challenging part comes at the points where we have to revamp the robot as everyone either doesn't want to or is very eager to take it apart, this can cause argumentation which i never like

Have you had past robotics experience? Yes, currently I have three years of robotics experience of coding, driving, building and managing

What is your favorite part about robotics? The atmosphere at worlds

Glenn Dillon
Quote: “I just like to smile”

Role: Builder

Why did you join robotics?  I joined robotics because I heard my friends say it was fun to work in a group after school. It peaked my interest and I decided to attend one of the first meetings.

What is the most challenging thing about robotics?
The most challenging part of robotics is designing parts without having physical pieces.

What has robotics helped you learn so far?
How to work together and create plans for us to execute as a team.

Have you had past robotics experience?
I have had some experience with robotics. I was on LEGO robotics in elementary school and left for a few years. Other than that, I have had no previous experience.

What is your favorite part about robotics?
My favorite part of robotics is working with my friends in order to accomplish a common goal.

I joined robotics because I was curious about robots and programming.

What has robotics helped you learn so far?
Robotics has helped me learn the importance of double checking everything I do, and being sure about my choices.

What is the most challenging thing about robotics?
The most challenging about robotics is securing funding for 5 teams.

Have you had past robotics experience?
This is my 5th year of robotics, I started out in middle school, and am now a senior.
